Garnishment

Sometimes, the person or company to whom you owe money will go to court. They will ask for a court order to make you pay your debt. For this to happen, they must first file a lawsuit. The court may order that money be taken out of your paycheck or bank account to satisfy a debt you owe. A creditor also can take and sell some of your property. These fact sheets offer general information about wage garnishment and execution and how you can keep some of your money and property safe from collection.
