Legal Aid School Supply Distribution a Success
Thanks to the generosity of the staff of Legal Aid of Arkansas, local pro bono attorneys, and others, many students of the Lee County School District in Marrianna are starting the school year with a new backpack full of school supplies. Overall, 171 children from 80 families received supplies distributed by Legal Aid staff at an event held on August 12th.
“This is the fourth year in a row we have sponsored this event in a location served by our Helena-West Helena office” said Lee Richardson, Legal Aid Executive Director. “The response from all concerned has been outstanding, and we are already planning for next year.”
Since the event was started in Helena-West Helena in 2007, almost 700 children have received school supplies, with the number growing each year. Supplies were distributed in Hughes in 2008 and Brinkley in 2009. This year, supplies included 144 clear backpacks, a new requirement in the school district. Donations from Legal Aid staff, pro bono attorneys, and other members of the justice community to buy supplies exceeded $1,500.
