There are many types of consumer reporting agencies, including credit bureaus and specialty agencies (like agencies that sell information about check writing histories, medical records, and rental history records).

This sample letter provides a written statement to the original creditor requesting to validate the debt they claim you owe. You can change this letter to meet your situation if you need to include more information. Make sure that the letter has your correct name, account number, and address. Keep a copy of this letter for your records. Send the original letter by certified mail, return receipt requested from the Post Office. This will give you proof that you sent the letter.
